The new Unsung Heroes column is up at The Film Experience. This week I'm paying tribute to Vladimir Tytla, the man who has legitimate claim to the title of "Best Animator in Movie History" If you ever smiled at the seven dwarves, cried at Dumbo, or been in awe of Fantasia's Night on Bald Mountain then you've experienced the work of this master. His name should be known by everyone who loves animation.

Mostly I just LOVE Disney. For so many people with the theme parks and all it has become almost a dirty word, but Walt Disney was amazing.
ReplyDeleteI'm soon to visit a Disney artwork exhibition at ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image). Can't wait! I think the music is also what makes Disney's 'Golden Age' special. 'Baby Mine' always brings a tear.
ReplyDeleteCheri - Yeah the crass commercialization can really get in the way sometimes. But when you get down to the things these artists achieved it can still take your breath away.
ReplyDeleteRuth - That exhibit sounds fantastic. I hope it travels. And yes the music is very powerful and under-appreciated as well. I can't tell you who wrote it off hand. I would have considered that as a topic if I didn't already have two or three musical entries planned for this series.
