2011 Superlatives: Best Ensemble
In honor of the top-to-bottom of perfection of everyone on screen in Mike Leigh's Topsy-Turvy from Jim Broadbent's Gilbert down to the unnamed Noh performers who inspire Gilbert to write The Makado I present the Topsy-Turvy Award for best ensemble performance.
And the winner is...
The cast of A Separation
With respect to the casts of Bridesmaids and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy this one goes to the actors of Farhadi's masterpiece. There are no one-dimensional characters here. No people defined by a single character trait. All the characters have the complexity to wander off and be the lead of a different story, right down to the judge trying to make sense of the whole mess. Together they make for an incredibly rich portrait. It is impossible to take sides when everyone is so human, so deserving of our sympathy.
Other 2011 Superlatives
Best Death Scene
Best Child Performance
Best Use of Profanity
Worst Use of Symbolism
Best Performance in a Bad Movie
Most Incoherent
Best Single Costume
Best Use of Typecasting
