In honor of his heroic effort to keep everyone awake during the Matrix sequels we present the Hugo Weaving Award for the best 2011 performance in an otherwise crappy film.
And the winner is...
Ellen Page in Super
James Gunn's Super may have been an interesting mess. It may have been an occasionally amusing mess. It may have even been an intentional mess. But a mess it was nevertheless. Rising above the abrupt tonal shifts and (deliberately?) sloppy filmmaking was Ellen Page's balls-to-the-wall deranged performance as Rainn Wilson's ultra-violent sidekick, "Boltie". Gunn's superhero spoof came closest to the hitting the mark whenever it focused on Page and the unhinged glee she took in dispensing violence without any hint of a redemptive moral code. Long after most of Super has faded from memory I still can't shake this crazed, fearless performance.
More 2011 Superlatives...
