Lately I have read a lot of people complaining that the quality of film criticism is in sharp decline thanks in large part to snarky, shallow blogs like this one. So in an effort to raise the level of discourse here's some scholarly, erudite criticism coming at you...
Ready...
Matthew McConaughey is the shit in Killer Joe. Seriously, he's the shit.
With this on top of Bernie and Magic Mike McConaughey has accomplished the most impressive career turnaround since Bill Murray went from wasting his talent in the likes of The Man Who Knew Too Little to becoming the embodiment of melancholy middle-aged soul in Rushmore and Lost in Translation. So many wasted years leaning on posters...
So with his jaw-dropping performance as the seductive, dangerous and deranged title character in William Friedkin's Killer Joe, Mr. McConaughey becomes the first actor of 2012 to register on Serious Film's Oscar tracking page. Check it out:
Best Actor - Oscar Page.

The film doesn't open in Toronto for another week. I've been dying to see it since I missed it at TIFF. Haven't seen Bernie yet either; its release totally passed me by. But on the strength of his performance in Magic Mike alone, I agree with you. Hopefully he'll get some recognition for it.
ReplyDeleteI feel so curmudgeonly saying it but I'm so slow to complete get on board with MM. Grantd, I have to see KILLER JOE, and granted I'm not one to write off a performer for performing in schlock. (I'm still the one man Katherine Heigl brigade.) I think it's because the way I've seen him perform in the schlock. I can't get a ticket to go to Lacuna to erase his work in THE WEDDING PLANNER from my head (a performance that rubs me so hard the wrong way).
ReplyDeleteThat's all a long aside to say I do like him in Magic Mike (but he's probably my third or fourth favourite of the bunch and I can't remember who I'm echoing here but I wish Salma Hayek was getting as much love for equally self-mocking performance in SAVAGES).
